Lake Vouglans

As you round the bend you cannot miss the spectacular view: surrounded by majestic forests, the shining surface of a vast lake twists and turns into the distance. No, this isn't Canada, it's the Jura mountains, and this is Lake Vouglans. 35km long and 450 metres wide, it's the third biggest reservoir in France, and at its southernmost point you can see the impressive 130 metre high dam.

The reservoir was filled in 1968, flooding the Ain valley. It's hard to remember what happened to the villages it swallowed up, like La Chartreuse de Vaucluse, when you see the clear turquoise waters of the lake, now a paradise for tourists, swimmers, fishing enthusiasts and walkers.
