A former Roman settlement, Lons-le-Saunier is now the Prefecture of the Jura department. It is also a spa town, where visitors come to experience the benefits of its salt water. Situated in the heart of the Jura's vineyards, Lons-le-Saunier is also steeped in history.
As well as playing an important role in the commercial and financial life of our region, Lons- le-Saunier also makes a significant contribution to local arts and culture, sport and tourism.
In summer there are open-air concerts as well as an attractive open-air café in the grounds of the thermal baths.
The town is also the birthplace of Rouget de Lisle (b.1760), who composed the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise".
